Ideate nel 1917 per carabine con meccanica Mauser, hanno avuto moltissimo successo in Europa per la caccia alla media selvaggina dei boschi montani, quasi tutte le ditte forniscono fucili misti, semiauto e bold action con una delle camerature in 7 mm. Brenneke.
La 7x65R è sovrapponibile alla .280 Rem. per la quale si possono usare le stesse dosi di ricarica. Sono responsabili dell'abbattimento della maggior parte dei cervi, caprioli, camosci Europei a riprova della loro precisione.
